Goresbrook victory sees Nazi BNP defeated in London

The Goresbrook by-election has seen the Nazi British National Party (BNP) lose the only seat that they held in London. Labour candidate Warren Northover got 51% of the vote, with the BNP coming second with 32%. The turnout in the election was 33.61%. This followed an intense, united campaign to ensure that all those who oppose the BNP were mobilised to vote.

Weyman Bennet, Joint Secretary of Unite Against Fascism said "This result shows that the anti-fascist vote was mobilised and united to stop the BNP. Unite is proud to have been part of the campaign to raise awareness around the threat of the BNP in Goresbrook. Barking had seen racist attacks rise in the time that the BNP were campaigning and won their seat. We must not be complacent. The BNP have polled their best results in this year's general election - but this campaign shows that their politics of race-hate can be defeated. We must now ensure that they stay out - that means pulling out all stops to defeat them in the Beacontree by-election on July 14th"

Keep the BNP out of London!
Becontree by-election days of action, Barking
Sunday 10 July, 11am Meeting point: Post office, 454 Becontree Avenue, Barking
Tuesday 12 July, 6pm
Meeting point: tbc

Following the defeat of the BNP's only London councillor in Barking last week, the BNP is standing a candidate in the forthcoming Becontree by-election on Thursday 14 July. UAF is asking supporters to join the day of action against the BNP on Sunday 10 July.

The Becontree ward is in the Barking constituency where the BNP polled their highest result (16.89%) in the general election.

Last week the only BNP councillor in London was defeated in the Goresbrook by-election in Barking, after the anti-BNP vote mobilised which increased the turnout to 33.6% compared to 28.8% in the previous election.
EVERYONE WHO CAME OUT TO HELP IN THIS BY-ELECTION CONTRIBUTED TO THIS VICTORY.
The BNP will be relying on a low turnout in order to get elected, so as in the Goresbrook by-election last week it is crucial that every vote is mobilised.
IF EVERYONE WHO OPPOSES THE BNP IN THIS WARD COMES OUT TO VOTE, THEY CAN BE DEFEATED.

If you would like to help on 10 or 12 July please email unite@natfhe.org.uk for telephone 020 7833 4916 or 07949 882 609

40,000 IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE SAY "UNITE AGAINST FASCISM"
June 23, 2005, 12:38 AM

Sunday's remarkable Unite Against Fascism/MayDay rally & music event in London's Trafalgar Square drew an amazing 40,000 people through the day.

The audience - black and white, young and old, showed the true face of today's multicultural Britain and hammered home the message that this is a generation united and determined to say Never Again to the threat of fascism, as represented by the Nazis of Nick Griffin's British National Party in this Thursday's General Election.

There were show-stopping performances by headliners Pete Doherty and Estelle, ably supported by the brilliant Terri Walker, Metro Riots, Roll Deep, Skeme & Big P, Crazy Titch & J2K, Ras Kwame, Bigga Fish and Lady Sovereign. Lively and entertaining hosts throughout the day were longtime LMHR supporters Rodney P & DJ Skitz , alongside UK hip-hop veteran MC D and Tibbs.

Between the acts, speakers highlighting the need to fight racism and fascism drew loud cheers from the audience.
Those present included living legend Tony Benn, Holocaust survivor Leon Greenman OBE, Lee Jasper from the National Assembly Against Racism and Weyman Bennett, Sabby Dhalu and Martin Smith from Unite Against Fascism, Paul Mackney General Secretary NATFHE lecturers' union, Adbul Bari from the Muslim Council of Britain, Pav Akhtar from the National Union of Students, Peter Turner - TUC National Officer LGBT and Disability rights, Mick Connolly from SERTUC, Glyn Ford MEP, and many others representing the organisations of event partners the London MayDay Organising Committee.

Among the most poignant moments of the day was when 94-year-old Holocaust survivor Leon Greenman - a talented singer himself - congratulated Estelle and Pete Doherty on their performances and told them about his experiences at the hands of Hitler's Nazis' death camps, and his continuing determination to help alert a new generation to the anti-fascist struggle.

We'll have more reviews of the day here soon, but for now check out some great photos of the event .....

The Leftfield tent/stage, Glastonbury Festival.

The Leftfield stage goes from strength to strength at Glastonbury. This showcase for mixing politics and culture, run by the trade union and social justice movements will this year have a massive 4,000-capacity tent for its home.

LMHR & Unite Against Fascism will have an information and merchandise stall inside the Leftfield for the duration of the festival (Thursday til Sunday night), but it's SATURDAY 25 JUNE that is the LMHR day inside the Leftfield.

At 5pm, The Amicus trade union and LMHR are proud to present the premiere of the fantastic Rock Against Racism/LMHR FILM "Who Shot the Sheriff?", directed by Alan Miles, and featuring all the key bands and activists from the RAR era of the late 70s, mixed with rare footage of RAR gigs featuring the likes of The Clash, Steel Pulse, The Specials and many more, plus as-yes-unseen footage of recent LMHR gigs like Pete Doherty and Estelle in Trafalgar Square and The Libertines playing with Mick Jones from The Clash at the Astoria last year.

At 6pm, there's a debate on the film and today's anti-fascist movement with speakers on the panel including Jerry Dammers and Neville Staples from The Specials, Weyman Bennett from Unite, Billy Bragg, Skeme, and more.

* *You can text your own contribution into the debate by sending
'debate facism' to **83010*
* There is a parallel debate hapening on the Leftfield forums:
http://forums.virtualfestivals.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=58881

A wicked line-up representing the best of the whole spectrum of UK music are taking part in what should be an amazing night of music to stop the BNP!

[See below for more on each act]

ALREADY GOT A TICKET FOR GLASTO?? GET IN TOUCH - WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO HELP RUN THE LMHR/UNITE STALL AT THE LEFTFIELD. GIVE US 2-3 HOURS AND GET INVOLVED - YOU NEVER KNOW YOU MIGHT MEET ONE OF THE TOP ACTS PLAYING THE LMHR NIGHT :0) .

The LeftField has a great line-up of music, comedy, and politics for the whole weekend ...

http://www.leftfield.coop

That Saturday night line-up in full then. Latest on listed first - get there early, with a capacity of 4,000 this one's certain to be full up well before the headliners hit the stage. Be there or, erm, watch Coldplay :0)

BABYSHAMBLES - Rock n roll mayhem to finish the night from the band featuring the Most Famous Rock Star in Britain (TM) - and also one of LMHR's biggest supporters over the last two years. 'Nuff said.

KANO - The next new UK rapper to make it into the charts with his incredible debut LP "Home Sweet Home", coming on The Streets' 679 label and ingeniously mixing grime, garage, jungle, hip-hop, r&b and rock in the footsteps of fellow east London grime scene graduate Dizzee Rascal. Expect unique style, and clever and conscious lyrics from one of the country's brightest young talents.

THE OTHERS - Infamous "guerilla-giggers" whose outspoken singer Dominic Masters put the concept to particularly good use during last June's local elections by playing off the back of LMHR and Unite's "Don't Vote BNP" battle truck over a whole day across London. Son of a union shop steward, Dominic is gonna feel right at home in the Leftfield... watch out for stray stagedivers!

HARD-FI - Described by lazy music journos as The Clash meets The Specials, nevertheless Hard-Fi are undoubtedly destined for greatness, effortlessly blending rock and dance music into songs that reflect the reality of life and love in Tony Blair's McBritain. Due for their first top 10 hit this Sunday with new single "Hard To Beat".

RODNEY P & SKITZ - The country's most celebrated hip-hop MC alongside the nation's best hip-hop DJ. Fresh from doing a brilliant job compering LMHR's Trafalgar Square General Election concert, Radio 1Xtra's dynamic duo bring the party to the Leftfield.

SKEME & BIG P with LAURIE STERLING - Among the most underrated of UK hip-hop MCs, Skeme & P are soldiers to the cause, rocking 10 LMHR shows in the last 18 months, from supporting Badly Drawn Boy and The Music in Liverpool to leading chants of "F*** the BNP" in Trafalgar Square in May. Appearing alongside Sterling Collat partner-in-crime, glorious chanteuse Laurie.

AGENT BLUE - Joyous youthful indie-punk from Stoke, personally chosen by Pete Doherty for this support slot, but in on merit anyway after slaying two packed LMHR events in their hometown (which currently has two BNP councillors) with their incendiary hlive show. Don't miss.

TEASING LULU - Teasing LuLu are here to kick some butt, with teen scream vocals and catchy choruses combined with attitude laden lyrics and energy packed live shows! Aged between 18-24 the girls have already supported The Damned and Eighties Matchbox Beeline Disaster as well as gigging regularly on their own

TURNCOAT (Amicus Discovered! battle-of-the-bands winner) - " hook laden alternative pop for audiences looking for a little more from their bands…"

The fascist British National Party are standing in the forthcoming by-election in the Goresbrook ward in Barking on 23rd June 2005. Daniel Kelley, the BNP's first councillor in London since 1993, recently stood down triggering this by-election. He had won this seat in September 2004 with over half the vote on a low turnout. Where the BNP have a presence, racist attacks increase - in the year running up to Kelley's election, racist attacks have soared by 18% in Barking and by 120% in neighbouring Havering.

At the general election, the BNP received their highest national vote in Barking with 16.89% of the vote - they see the area as a target for further advances.

LMHR GIG IN BARKING & DAGENHAM THIS WEEKEND: STOP THE BNP WINNING BACK THEIR ONLY LONDON COUNCIL SEAT!
June 16, 2005, 02:11 AM

The BNP lied their way to electing their first London councillor in 11 years last autumn in Barking's Goresbrooke ward. The highly-intelligent fascist councillor Daniel Kelly resigned his position there recently owing to "personal reasons" (mainly it seems this great man couldnt understand what was going on at council meetings).

Now the anti-fascist majority of local people in Barking have the chance to stop the BNP winning the seat back in a by-election on Thursday 23 June.

A Unite Against Fascism day of action there last week was attended by 120 people and many local groups and individuals are getting involved to make sure the BNP are not successful in dividing the mixed and largely peaceful community in the area with their poisonous racism. (See report and pictures at http://www.uaf.org.uk/events/050611dayofactionLON.htm )

The first LMHR gig in Barking takes place the Sunday before the by-election with established stars alongside young local talents
