LMHR @ GUILDFORD AMBIENT GREEN PICNIC THIS SUNDAY

LMHR has a major presence at this year's Ambient Green Picnic music festival in Guildford, Surrey, taking place on Sunday 1 August 2004, from 12 noon til 9pm.

LMHR-supporting artists The Fades (main stage), Skitz & Rodney P and L Double (dance stage) are appearing, and there'll be big prominent LMHR and Unite Against Fascism banners, a LMHR/Unite info/merchandise stall and LMHR/Unite speakers encouraging people to get involved.

'RAP, GUNS, AND RACISM' - LMHR DEBATE + SHOW IN LONDON THIS SUNDAY FEAT. ASHER D, RODNEY P, D DOUBLE E, SKINNYMAN + more

LMHR is providing two nights' entertainment at the week-long political festival 'Marxism 2004' which starts this Friday (9th July) in central London.

The festival/conference consists of hundreds of debates and guest speakers from all over the world discussing every hot political issue from the war on Iraq to fighting women's oppression to name but two. In the evenings there's music, film, theatre etc. See the bottom of this page for ticket information.

On the SUNDAY night (11th July), there is both a debate AND gig involving LMHR. These take place in Room 101 of the ULU building, Malet Street, London WC1 (nearest tubes Goodge Street / Warren Street / Russell Sq / Tottenham Court Rd - see www.marxism2004.net for details).

From 8.30pm, there'll be performances from some of the best artists currently working in UK hip-hop and garage music, including:-

The debate before the gig starting at 7pm sharp, is titled 'RAP, GUNS, AND RACISM', and will be discussing politicians and the media's obession with blaming the black community and 'black music' for the alleged rise in gun & drug crime, and related violence. The debate will ask is gun crime a problem only for the black community, what exactly is 'black on black crime', and is black or 'urban' music like garage and hip-hop responsible for fuelling crime and violence, merely reflecting reality, or something else?

Panel speakers will include:-
ASHER D from So Solid Crew. Asher, an acclaimed actor and rapper, was jailed for possession of a firearm two years ago. He'll be bringing his experience of the British criminal justice system and music industry to bear on the debate.
WEYMAN BENNETT, joint secretary of Unite Against Fascism and national organiser of the Anti Nazi League. Weyman, who has also stood for parliament as a Socialist Alliance candidate, has been a political activist and anti-racism campaigner for over 20 years. He was the national organiser of the campaign against the Criminal Justice Bill in 1994-95.
COREY JOHNSON. Promoter, producer and artist in his own right, Corey is heavily involved in contemporary black music thru his Defenders LOS label and agency. Corey has been highly active within the Love Music Hate Racism campaign this year.
SKEME. Skeme is a highly-respected artist within the UK hip-hop scene. His music alongside partner Big P fuses classy flows with inventive beats, informed by a highly-tuned political consciousness. Skeme has also recently got involved in LMHR, performing at the recent Liverpool event with The Music and Badly Drawn Boy.

The debate is open to everyone and questions and points from the audience will be very much encouraged.

TICKETS for the entire festival are priced as follows:-
Week ticket £55 (£46 unwaged/HE student)
Weekend ticket £46 (£32 unwaged/HE student)
School/FE/Under 18: Week £22/Weekend £16

Alternatively, you can book a morning/afternoon/evening session ticket. An evening session ticket includes the last debate of that evening as well as that night's entertainment. Session tickets cost £9 or £5 for students/school/unemployed.

LMHR and UNITE @ GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL - REPORT

Glastonbury was great! Once again, there was a major LMHR/Unite anti-racist anti-fascist presence, mainly in the Left Field tent.

Thursday night saw a brilliant LMHR party in the LeftField with DJ L Double, Skitz & Rodney P, Corey Johnson & Naydean, and DJs Bo!ne, Vlad, and Dushka.

On Saturday night there was an amazing Rock Against Racism night with Katastrophy Wife, Capdown, The Filaments and Jetplane Landing.

The tent was packed with well over 1,000 people for each night, who lapped up the political message of unity against the Nazis.

On the Saturday afternoon, there was also a lively debate on 'How Can We Stop Fascism?', featuring speakers Weyman Bennett from Unite Against Fascism and Dave Randall, musician with the band Slovo.

Throughout the weekend the Unite Against Fascism/LMHR stall went down a storm with lots of people signing up to get involved in the campaign, and the LMHR/RAR/Unite badges selling like hot cakes!

Thanks to the organisers of the LeftField (longtime LMHR supporters Geoff Martin and everyone at Ethical Threads) for inviting us, and congrats to them on organising such an excellent space within the festival, set to get even bigger and better next year.
