LMHR @ GLASTONBURY
We've again been asked to have a major presence in the Leftfield tent/stage at this year's Glastonbury Festival (see www.leftfield.coop).
There'll be a great LMHR club night with SKITZ & RODNEY P, L DOUBLE, DJ KRUST & DJ DIE (FULL CYCLE/REPRAZENT), NICKY BLACKMARKET & MC FOXY, EMMA FELINE, METZ & TRIX, and COREY JOHNSON, NAYDEAN and BLADE. We can't announce details of that before the festival starts for contractual reasons, so email or call us (020 7924 0333) for the info on that one.
On the Saturday night, there'll be a ROCK AGAINST RACISM live music night, featuring KATASTROPHY WIFE (feat. Kat Bjelland, ex-Babes in Toyland), MILLION DEAD and CAPDOWN among others (see www.leftfield.coop)
The political side of things will also be to the fore, with a Unite Against Fascism/LMHR debate in the Leftfield on Saturday at 4pm.
Finally, there will be Unite and LMHR stall with info, leaflets, badges, t-shirts etc in the Leftfield for the duration of the festival, running each day between approx. 11am-7pm.
We need your help to make this stall a success to make sure anti-racism and anti-fascism gets well promoted at Glastonbury. If you already have a ticket for the festival please give us a couple of hours of your time to help on the LMHR/Unite stall. Note - you MUST already have a ticket for the festival, we have none to give out. If you're up for helping, please get in touch ASAP to let us know. .
BNP REJECTED BY VOTERS - ANTI-FASCIST CAMPAIGNS A MASSIVE SUCCESS! LMHR TO CONTINUE WINNING FORMULA...
June 14, 2004, 11:42 AM
The BNP failed to make the breakthrough they were expecting in the European and local elections. See below for Unite Against Fascism's analysis of the election results.
Love Music Hate Racism - from the big high-profile events in Sunderland, Liverpool, Enfield and at the London Astoria to all the smaller events across the country - has helped alert thousands to the danger of the BNP and helped encourage a positive feeling of unity against the Nazis.
Even the process of building for and publicising the sadly postponed London carnival got many new people involved in campaigning and helped get people out to vote.
Thanks and congratulations are due to all the bands, DJs, MCs, and above all activists who helped make such a difference. We now aim to keep the momentum going and keep the racists on the backfoot.
With a possible general elections, plus more local council elections due next year, LMHR is going to start NOW with planning a massive London outdoor carnival. This event is planned for Sunday 1st May 2005. Watch this space very soon for the proposed venue.
Over the next few months, with many artists pledged to support the campaign, there'll be a series of high-profile fundraising gigs across the UK, as well as the many many smaller events people everywhere are starting to organise - the level of interest in putting on LMHR gigs is massive! All funds raised will be put into staging next year's festivals, so they can be kept free to enter.
As well as the London event, there are plans for a big carnival in Yorkshire, there is a LMHR carnival in Stoke-on-Trent on September 11, and there'll be many others next spring and summer in other areas.
We urge everyone to get involved in whatever way you can in the coming months - we'll keep showing we Love Music and Hate Racism until every BNP councillor is dumped out of office!
“Electorate rejects Britain’s fascists - BNP down for the count!”
UNITE AGAINST FASCISM - and a host of national and local organizations and individuals around Britain - have thwarted the fascist British National Party (BNP) in its attempt to breakthrough into mainstream politics.
Although the BNP polled high votes in some areas, it fell way short of its ambition for representation in the London, Euro and local elections last Thursday 10th June.
Unite Against Fascism will now go on the offensive against the BNP, making sure that it is further marginalised from national and local politics and our communities.
The day before the vote BNP leader Nick Griffin went on the record with the statement:
“The British National Party is on target to take between 14 and 16% of the Euro vote in our key regions, winning a record number of council seats, positions on the Greater London Assembly, and breaking through with three or four MEPs”.
· N Griffin, “A day to make history”, BNP website, 9 June 2004
In all three electoral arenas the BNP failed to reach its own targets.
When French fascist Jean-Marie Le Pen entered Britain at the invitation of Nick Griffin earlier this year, it was widely touted that the BNP were poised to join the European group of fascists in the European parliament. It hasn’t happened. That is down to a lot of hard work from our supporters, the trade unions and community and faith organisations.
“Unite against Fascism has played a key role in the defeat of the fascists. We produced five million leaflets, 200,000 posters and organised thousands of people in activities across Britain”

Anti-BNP vote mobilised to defeat BNP in 2004 Euro and London elections
The British National Party (BNP) failed to gain the seats they expected in this year’s European and London Assembly elections, following a successful campaign mounted by Unite Against Fascism to increase voter turnout and mobilise the anti-BNP vote.
The BNP’s strongest chance of winning a seat to the European Parliament was in the North West where BNP leader Nick Griffin stood as a candidate. Although the BNP received 134,958 votes (6.4%) in the North West this was not enough to gain a seat. This was due to the huge increase in turnout which more than doubled from last time at 40.9% - the turnout was 19.4% in 1999 at the last Euro elections - indicating a strong mobilisation of the anti-BNP vote to stop Nick Griffin from becoming an MEP.
In London the BNP gained 90,365 votes - 4.71% of the votes cast. The BNP were 5,720 short of the 5% barrier needed to gain a seat on the London Assembly. Their vote almost doubled from the 47,670 - 2.83% - they received last time. Therefore the critical factor in stopping the BNP was the increased turnout of 37% - up from 32% last time. There were not all postal vote ballots in London indicating a strong mobilisation of the anti-BNP vote in London.
In the local elections the gained 14 seats, 5 of their sitting councillors lost their seats and the BNP now have 21 councillors across Britain.
Brendan Barber, TUC General Secretary said:
"The far right have failed to make a breakthrough in either the European or London elections. This is a tribute to the dedication of ordinary people throughout the country who worked hard to put across the positive message of equality and diversity. One fascist is too many so trade unions will continue to organise to defeat them wherever they are"
Iqbal Sacranie, Muslim Council of Britain Secretary General elect said:
"The fascist-leaning BNP are a stain on our multifaith society. We are saddened to see that they have made some further poisonous inroads into some new constituencies but relieved that this was not the breakthrough they were anticipating. All our communities need to unite against this menacing party and its violent agenda."
Arlene McCarthy MEP said:
"Beating the BNP was the best result of the night. Yet again Unite Against
Fascism's campaign has kept the BNP out. The people of the North West have
seen the BNP for the racists and trouble makers they really are. We must now
continue to reduce their support and marginalise them yet further from British politics."
Diane Abbott MP said:
"It is very significant that the BNP didn't gain a seat in the London
Assembly and the European Parliament this time. With local elections next year in London - that the BNP is likely to target - the campaign against racism and fascism continues"
Sabby Dhalu Unite Against Fascism Joint Secretary (National assembly Against Racism) said:
“The BNP’s goal this year was to make a breakthrough in the capital by winning a seat on the London Assembly and winning a seat in the European Parliament. This would have given them an unprecedented national platform. The BNP failed. This is a result of the campaign mounted by Unite Against Fascism to boost the turnout and to unite all communities opposed to the BNP. Defeating the BNP in the London and the European Parliament is a tremendous victory for Unite Against Fascism”
Weyman Bennett, Unite against Fascism Joint Secretary (Anti Nazi League) said:
The nazis BNP said that this was their year of breakthrough we defeated them by mobilising thousands anti fascists. Unity is our strength and we will together ensure fascism does not get a foothold here
Unite Against Fascism will continue to campaign against the BNP in light of the high votes that the BNP poled nationally and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who supported Unite Against Fascism and helped campaign against the BNP.

'GUERILLA GIGS' SPREAD UNITY and ANTI-FASCIST MESSAGE IN LONDON! REPORT AND PHOTOS
June 07, 2004, 05:01 PM
Campaigners from Unite Against Fascism, along with bands and MCs supporting Love Music Hate Racism and Unite staged a unique series of outdoor live events in London yesterday (Sunday 6 June).
With the LMHR London festival - both the outdoor Finsbury Park one and the replacement indoor Hammersmith Apollo show - having to be cancelled, everyone involved was determined that our voices of unity in opposition to the fascist BNP would not be silenced.
Enter the 'Unite battle truck' - a 7.5 ton lorry with booming sound system on the back.
Starting at original festival venue Finsbury Park, spirited sets from THE FADES and GRAVYRAMBLES (an indie 'supergroup' comprising members of THE OTHERS, THE CRIBS and more) set the tone for the day. A crowd soon gathered, and a great carnival atmosphere took over the street at the entrance to the park, with cars tooting their horns, and local people enthusiastically taking 1000s of Unite leaflets about this Thursday's elections, with loads of debates about the issues kicking off in the street.
Having started late, we sadly had to miss out Wood Green in favour of heading straight to Camden Town. Initially parking up opposite Camden tube station,
there was another great another great set from GRAVYRAMBLES including THE OTHERS' classics 'This is For the Poor' and 'Stan Bowles'
We then moved up the road to Camden Lock, where we were joined by ART BRUT who grabbed attention and a crowd with a set lead off by a raucous version of celebrated debut single 'Formed a Band'. More people started taking the Unite leaflets to give out and again in Camden there was a great response to the anti-fascist message.
Brixton followed Camden, and then finally we made our way to Brick Lane in the East End where MILLION DAN, NAVIGATOR and DEMOLITION MAN roused the crowds thronging the bars and curry houses and coming down to see what was going on - getting everyone to raise their fist against racism, dropping some lyrical wisdom about voting against the BNP on Thursday, and performing current UK hip-hop/ragga stormer "Dogz n Sledgez" to huge applause.
Brick local OTHERS frontman Dominic then led GRAVYRAMBLES thru another passionate chaotic set, followed by another from ART BRUT - frontman shouter Eddie leaping off the truck in his suit and socks to urge people to use their vote to keep the BNP out on Thursday. Once again, thousands of Unite leaflets were given out.
Unite joint secretary Weyman Bennett kept the message going out loud and clear through the day, radio mic in hand, providing all the facts and arguments omn the fight against racism and fascism. A special thanks goes to Tony & Ronnie Gulley who drove the truck and kept the sound system and technical going all day long - big up.

WE REGRET TO ANNOUNCE THAT SUNDAY'S LMHR/UNITY FESTIVAL IS POSTPONED
June 02, 2004, 05:16 PM
Unite and LMHR would like to sincerely apologise for any arrangements anyone has already made in respect of Sunday 6 June and any inconvenience this reluctant postponement may cause you. The LMHR London festival will return, at an outdoor venue, next year.
The reason for the postponement is that the main headline act, The Libertines, have had to pull out of Sunday's show due to the ill health of guitarist Peter Doherty. Without The Libertines, the show just isn't viable in a venue this size. Until today the band and their management at Creation Poptones still felt that the band would be able to play. Unfortunately, Peter's recovery from illness has not progressed as quickly as everyone expected, and the rest of the band are understandably unwilling to do any show without Peter at this difficult time. Please also see the separate official statement from Libertines' management.
Unite Against Fascism and Love Music Hate Racism send our very best wishes to Peter, his family, and friends and wish him the speediest possible recovery.
If you already have an advance ticket, you will be able to get a full refund from the Unite offices or from Bookmarks. Any credit/debit card details given over the phone to Unite will be destroyed and not used.
Unite and LMHR urge everybody to do all they can to prevent the election of fascist BNP MEPs or local councillors/GLA members in the elections on Thursday 10 June. Use your vote, if you have one, to vote for any candidate other than a BNP one. If you aren't yet able to vote, get involved in what Unite is doing in your local area - leaflet your local area, school, or workplace, join activists petitioning and touring areas warning of the BNP threat.
We would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to try to stage a major musical protest against racism and fascism ahead of June 10. That work will not be in vain. Hundreds of artists big and small across the UK have now publicly stated their determination to stop the fascists, and many have pledged to play LMHR gigs in the coming months. Last Sunday's Badly Drawn Boy/The Music gig in Liverpool was an amazing, inspiring night, for example. As a result. many more people have become of aware of the threat posed by the BNP and are getting involved in the campaign to do something about it.
We'll leave the last word to Pete Doherty:-
"I don't think you have to be a particularly developed human being intellectually or spiritually to despise racism. It may be easy to becomplacent, but we need to encourage people to fight racism whether with words or actions. Count me in - I'll fight!".

BADLY DRAWN BOY & THE MUSIC + 2,800 FANS TRIUMPHANT AT THE LIVERPOOL GIG THE 'SECRET POLICEMEN' COULDNT STOP
June 01, 2004, 06:08 PM
Despite having to move to Liverpool at very short notice due to unreasonable and rather worrying* objections from Greater Manchester Police ('GMP'), BDB and The Music insisted the show must go on so they and North West music fans could celebrate their unity and show their opposition to the fascist BNP. Gfreat credit goes to all at the Liverpool Academy for their help in staging this event in double-quick time. Check out the reports and photos on the websites below on a night that one seasoned observer called "the best gig in Liverpool for 20 years"....
BBC Music
NME.com
Socialist Worker newspaper
* - GMP's representative at the last meeting held with organisers and Manchester Council said that "my blood runs cold at the thought of this event taking place". To resolve health & safety and licensing issues Unite moved indoors to the MEN Arena, whose management were also leaned on by GMP to not allow the gig, again on spurious "health & safety" grounds. Even when the gig moved to the Liverpool Academy, Merseyside police tried to put pressure on Academy management to pull out, even alleging that the promoters wouldnt pay for the venue! All comes not long after the BBC's "Secret Policeman" documentary exposed massive racism and a BNP presence among the North West's police forces. On the evidence of the last few weeks it seems North West England's police still have a problem with sympathy for the BNP and contempt for anti-racists in their ranks.
TICKET INFO FOR LONDON EVENT
June 01, 2004, 04:40 PM
LOVE MUSIC HATE RACISM FESTIVAL SUNDAY 6 JUNE, HAMMERSMITH APOLLO, LONDON. TICKET INFORMATION:-
The Libertines are confirmed to play this Sunday, regardless of recent press stories about Peter Doherty.
Please see www.lmhr.org.uk for the complete confirmed line-up.
Tickets will be available from 10am on the morning of Wednesday 2 June.
While tickets for this event are still free, we will be asking for donations to help cover the cost of staging the event. As we have been forced to move indoors our major funding has been withdrawn and so we would ask everybody who can to make a donation to Unite to help cover our costs, in return for what we know will be an amazing, memorable and historic show.
For advance tickets we will be asking for a minimum donation of five pounds.
If you are in London or surrounding areas you MUST collect any advance tickets in person (max 2 per person) from one of the outlets shown below. If
you live outside London and cannot make it into town before the event, please email us at unite6june@yahoo.co.uk to arrange to get a ticket.
We realise this is not an ideal arrangement,, particularly for those of you outside London, but please bear in mind we are not a music promoter we are a political campaign, and until very recently this was meant to be a free unticketed outdoor event. Those plans having had to change so quickly, these arrangements are the best we can offer, but we hope everyone will still be able to come and that the process will be relatively painless!
Thanks to everyone for their patience and understanding.
If there are tickets left by the day of the show (as we expect there will be), it may be possible to get one via the venue, but as demand for this show is extremely high we would advise getting a ticket in advance to guarantee entry to the show.
You can get tickets in person from:-
