STOP PRESS: LONDON FESTIVAL FORCED INDOORS
May 27, 2004, 06:20 PM
From nme.com
LONDON's UNITY FESTIVAL - set to feature THE LIBERTINES - has been forced to change location.
The festival, which aims to raise awareness about increasing far right political activity in the UK, was set to take place in Finsbury Park on June 6. However, it has been forced to move to the indoor Hammersmith Apollo, and possibly one other venue.
The show would have been London's first major outdoor anti-racism rally since 1978's Carnival Against The Nazis.
However, while a licence was about to be granted, police insisted that organisers erect a metal perimeter fence around the Finsbury Park, making the event too expensive to hold. This has annoyed organisers.
Weyman Bennett, Joint Secretary for Unite Against Facism, told NME.COM: "We believe if you can have opera in Trafalgar Square unshielded, then you can have rock music in a park and people can come and listen to it."
Check the LMHR site tomorow for details of how to get tickets for the event. While you can still get into this event free, we will be asking everyone for a donation to help towards the costs of staging it.
MANCHESTER SHOW MOVED TO LIVERPOOL AFTER OBJECTIONS FROM MANCHESTER POLICE
May 25, 2004, 06:39 PM
The bad news is that, having being moved from Castlefield Arena to the M.E.N. Arena, the Unity festival has once again been stopped from taking place in Manchester - largely due to the strange objections to the event from Greater Manchester Police.
However, The Music and Badly Drawn Boy both felt very strongly that they wanted to do something in the North West against the BNP on the date planned, so we have managed to secure Liverpool Academy at very short notice. The new line-up is:-

DAVID GRAY SPEAKS OUT AGAINST THE BNP AND IS ADDED TO LONDON FESTIVAL LINEUP
May 23, 2004, 04:52 PM
We're delighted to say that the UK's premier singer-songwriter DAVID GRAY will be playing a full band set at the LMHR Festival in Finsbury Park on Sunday 6 June (see news item below).
This is what David had to say about stopping the BNP nazis...
"We quite rightly pride ourselves on being a tolerant and multicultural society. these values however are being quietly eroded, aided by the culture of fear and suspicion that the 'war on terrorism' has helped promote. everyday brings fresh talk of enemies in our midst. the BNP senses an opportunity, and they are working flat out to establish themselves as a voice in british politics. this gig and this campaign is a wake up call to the complacent and the apathetic to say 'get off your arse they must be stopped!"

"Our music is a living testament to the fact that cultures can and do
mix. Music unites us and gives us strength, while racism seeks only to divide
and weaken us. Whether it's soul, indie, garage, rock, jungle, house, hip-hop
or bhangra, music brings us together. Love Music Hate Racism events offers a
vibrant celebration of our multicultural and multiracial society. As guests
of The Leftfield at We Love Homelands, LMHR will be showcasing the best of
multicultural urban British music to send out a message to everyone opposed to
racism to vote and do whatever they can to keep out the far-right in this
June's local and European elections"

LONDON LMHR/UNITY FESTIVAL - THE LIBERTINES TO HEADLINE AND DAVID GRAY TO PLAY IN FINSBURY PARK
May 13, 2004, 06:32 PM
We can at long last announce that the London Love Music Hate Racism festival will be held in Finsbury Park, north London, on Sunday 6 June, from 12 noon til 8pm.
The event is completely FREE to enter, so you won't need a ticket - just turn up early as there will be licenses limit on attendance (tbc). However we'll be encouraging everybody who can to give a donation to help pay for the cost of staging the event, either on the day or even better beforehand! (** see bottom of this page for details)
Headlining a wonderfully eclectic bill will be THE LIBERTINES, with VERY special guest artists to be announced, and there's something for everyone across a main stage and dance marquee that feature rock, hip-hop, bhangra, reggae, garage, indie, bashment, punk, electro r&b and drum'n'bass. The very best of UK music talent uniting against racism and fascism.
The event comes just four days before the London Assembly and Euro elections on Thursday 10 June in which the fascist BNP hope to win seats. The BNP are currently polling 5% of the vote in London, enough to get them a seat on the GLA. They need get only 10% in any Euro seat to get an MEP. But we can stop them. The 6 June festival, along with the one in Manchester on 30 May will see tens of thousands celebrating black and white unity against the racists and fascists and send a message out loud and clear - the BNP's not welcome here!

PRESS RELEASE:-
Join us in Manchester on Sunday May 30 for a fantastic day of music
and unity, and help send out a message loud and clear that the racism
of the fascist British National Party is not welcome in the North West
- or anywhere else.
A spectacular bill featuring the cream of northern musical talent
will entertain and encourage everybody to do what they can to stop the
election of BNP leader Nick Griffin as the North West's Euro MP.
There'll be full headlining sets from Leeds' majestic THE MUSIC and
Manchester's own favourite songsmitb BADLY DRAWN BOY.
Other Manchester acts on the main stage include Asian Music Award
winning MC-DJ team METZ & TRIX, guitar anthem merchants HAVEN,
super-talented garage collective VIRUS SYNDICATE and the rhyme skills
of BROKE'N'ENGLISH and NORTHERN MONKEYS.
Completing the main stage line-up will be a UK hip-hop showcase
hosted by Brit rap legends SKITZ & RODNEY P, London's hippest
punk-funkers BLOC PARTY, hotly-tipped West Yorkshire indie pop
outfit THE CRIBS, and Birmingham's first lady of hip-hop, HARDKAUR.
A strong supporting cast of top DJs will also be rocking a massive
dance marquee.
The event is completely FREE to enter, but donations are very
welcome!
As well as being a celebration of our multiracial and multicultural
music and society, the event will form a major part of Unite Against
Fascism's campaign in the North West and beyond around the local and
European elections on June 10th. BNP leader Nick Griffin, who has a
conviction for Holocaust denial and whose stated aim is "an all-white
society", is standing in the North West Euro-seat.
Unite Against Fascism (www.uaf.org.uk ) is
bringing together all anti-racist groups and everyone who opposes the
BNP in the UK. A campaign of mass leafletting, petitioning and public
meetings is calling for people to use their vote, and actively stop the BNP
from gaining ground on June 10.
With the PR voting systems that apply in these elections, and a
probable low turnout, the BNP need poll only 10% in the Euro seat to
get elected. That would mean a platform in Brussels to spread their
racist poison, £100,000s in funding, and the thing they crave above
all - a suited-and-booted mask of respectability to hide the skinhead
haircut and bovver boot image of old.
What we all do now to stop the BNP can make a real difference to
whether they succeed or fail.
Music unites us, but racism divides. Come to Manchester on May 30 to
show you Love Music and Hate Racism. Let's Unite Against Fascism!
