GLASTONBURY REPORT
July 02, 2003, 11:09 PM
The Glastonbury Festival was a fantastic event. The Leftfield, of which LMHR and the ANL were a part, was a huge success. Our opening night event, featuring Skitz & Rodney P, L Double, and Emma Feline was a big hit (sadly Heartless Crew got on the huge site too late to play!), with a packed-out marquee lapping up the big d&b, hip-hop and garage tunes being dropped...
Anti-racist and anti-Nazi speeches drew huge cheers from the overwhelmingly young crowd, many of whom came to back throughout the weekend, to hear and see the likes of Tony Benn, Mark Thomas, Mark Steel and Billy Bragg and debates on war, globalisation and much more. There was also a tribute night to Joe Strummer on Friday, after which LMHR DJs hit the decks.
Despite being on Sunday morning (not the most active time for many festival-goers!), our forum on "Stopping the Nazis" drew around 200 people, and after an introduction by LMHR organiser Lee, there was a terrific debate about how we can stop the BNP in the coming months. There was loads of interest in the ANL stall, with lots of people joining, lots of t-shirts and badges sold and plenty of money raised for the campaign.
A big shout to Geoff Martin, Sarah Greene, and all the wonderful Leftfield crew and workers for a fantastic weekend of music and politics. See you next year!
