EVERYONE MARCH AGAINST RACISM & THE NAZIS IN MANCHESTER THIS SATURDAY 26th!
March 27, 2003, 12:28 PM

April 26-27 is set to be a whole weekend of anti-racist and anti-Nazi protest and music in the North West.

On Saturday 26 April, the day before our Love Music Hate Racism special event in Burnley, trade union UNISON have announced an anti-racism march, rally and entertainment in central Manchester's Albert Square, to be followed by an anti-racism concert in the evening at Manchester Apollo.

LMHR and the ANL urge every anti-racist who can to get along to this event to send out the strongest possible anti-racist and anti-Nazi message ahead of the May 1st elections.

CARNIVAL POSTPONED - BUT BJAXX & WESTWOOD GO TO BURNLEY!
March 25, 2003, 02:14 PM

After our planned April Carnival had to be switched from Burnley to Blackburn, we've now received the bad news that the proposed venue in Blackburn, Witton Park, won't be able to host the Carnival. The ground there has become too waterlogged during the last few weeks, making the potential damage and therefore cost, too high for us to go with at this point. We will be organising another big outdoor LMHR carnival during the summer.

We're delighted to say though, that BASEMENT JAXX & TIM WESTWOOD will still be appearing - at an all-day LMHR event at BURNLEY's Mechanics venue on the same day - Sunday 27th April, along with other special guests to be announced very soon. Two of Burnley's three Nazi BNP councillors are up for re-election just four days later, and earlier in the day of the 27th everyone is urged to join anti-Nazi protest and leafletting in the town (meeting place and time tbc).

Also - don't forget Mr Scruff plays a LMHR night in Blackburn on April 18th, and Milltown Brothers and more play Burnley Mechanics next Friday 4th April.

Blackburn-with-Darwen Council stressed that their decision to refuse use of Witton Park at this stage was on purely technical/practical grounds. They have stated they'll be glad to consider another application for an event during the summer if required, when the ground will be much drier. We're in talks with planners of other major Blackburn events this summer, such as Music in the Park, Blackburn Mela, and Blackburn Rovers FC, about working jointly with them or having a LMHR presence at one or more of these events.

We'd previously applied to have a Carnival in Burnley ... here's how Burnley Council once more refused to cooperate:-

Once again, Burnley Borough Council have disgracefully refused an Entertainment Licence for a Love Music Hate Racism in the town.

PATHETIC EXCUSES

This is the third time the Labour-run council has pandered to the town's tiny racist minority by turning down the opportunity for a positive day of FREE diverse music to unite all sections of the community to show an alternative to the Nazis' divisive poisonous ideas.

Burnley Council's excuses for turning down the Carnival licence application are:-

- The parks we applied for have football matches on that day (apparently a change of venue or postponement for these vital games was out of the question)
- The event is too close to the local elections, which may cause 'problems'! (presumably they mean this might - shock horror - affect the BNP vote! there's certainly never been a single incident of trouble at any ANL/LMHR event, and the Nazis themselves have always been far too cowardly to attend)
- The Council say they themselves are planning a number of musical and cultural events, which they don't think should be organised by "external organisations" like the Anti Nazi League! No-one we know in Burnley has heard any firm plans for these events, certainly no plans for the sort of ANTI-RACIST event that's needed so much; this is also an insult to the many ANL members, activists and supporters who live in Burnley, while showing the sort of 'outsider'-unfriendly insular attitude that has surely helped the BNP's cause in the town.

April 27th is just four days before May's local elections - when two of the Nazi BNP's Burnley councillors are up for re-election. We will still have a fantastic peaceful and positive day of music indoors in Burnley at The Mechanics venue that day to send out a loud message to the Nazis - you're not wanted here!

BBC BANS ANTI-WAR RECORD: COMPLAIN!
March 21, 2003, 08:21 PM

LMHR urges everyone to oppose this rotten war by any means necessary. Apart from the illegal attack on innocent Iraqis being plain WRONG, the war already has and will continue to stoke up racism, especially against Muslims, here in the UK and elsewhere. Now we hear that the good old BBC, defender of free speech (NOT), has effectively banned a great anti-war record by LMHR supporter Life (of Phi-Life Cypher) called "Bush and Blair". Click below to read a message from Life's record label Tru Thoughts and how to complain.

PRESS STATEMENT

BBC STOPS DJ'S PLAYING :

'BUSH AND BLAIR' by LIFE (ZEBRA TRAFFIC RECORDS)

We have recently been informed that the BBC have told a number of DJ's to stop playing the above record.
DJ's on BBC 1XTRA have been playing the record for the past 8 weeks. They have now been told not to play it.

MR SCRUFF recently presented a 2 hour mix to BBC radio which had a 20 minute 'peace' section which included the above record. He was told that he could not use 'Bush & Blair' in his mix.

This is very frustrating as license fee payers and an independent record label, particularly as the track has been played on a number of regional radio shows across the UK including Brighton, Liverpool, Manchester, Dublin, Glasgow and London. John Kennedy from XFM playlisted it for a week and invited people to phone in and discuss it - isn't this what democracy is about?

The track is about to appear on the album 'PEACE NOT WAR' =0 alongside tracks from Ms Dynamite, Massive Attack, Beastie Boys, Alabama 3 and Roots Manuva.

This is not just a music issue but one of censorship. Please let us or the BBC now your feeling on this matter:-

HELP BUILD LMHR & GET INTO TOP GIGS AND CLUBS FOR FREE!
March 19, 2003, 08:45 PM

An increasing number of top bands and clubs are allowing (or in some cases asking for) LMHR stalls at their gigs/clubnights. Recent examples include Doves, Audioslave, Kinesis/Miss Black America /Reuben, Nas, Asian Dub Foundation, Idlewild, Bigga Fish and many more.

Help do a LMHR stall at a gig or club - and you get a top night out for nothing, hopefully raising some money and awareness for LMHR in the process, so what are ya waiting for?!

.... all you have to do is turn up at the venue with LMHR/ANL literature, badges, t-shirts etc, and before and after the gig try to talk to as many people as possible about LMHR and getting involved in our campaign. Remember - you get a top night out for nothing, but you'll hopefully be raising some money and awareness for LMHR in the process!

Up for it? Email us ASAP to get started or if you've got any suggestions for gigs/clubs we should get a stall at.

LMHR Glasgow to picket Dannii Minogue appearance at nightclub opening this Friday 21st
March 18, 2003, 11:21 PM

Many people in Glasgow are angry that unrepentant Dannii Minogue - who criticised asylum seekers and "council estate dwellers" last November - is the choice to re-open city centre nightclub Destiny's. Join the protest there this Friday night (21st) and complain to the club's management.

Dannii Minogue's bigoted racist comments about asylum seekers - in an interview with Independent editor Simon Kelner last November - led to a huge amount of fully justified criticism. Despite being invited by the Anti Nazi League to specifically repudiate her comments, all we got in response were vague platitudes about her words being "taken out of context" and threats of legal action against the BNP, which have mysteriously failed to materialise.

Many people in Glasgow have therefore been angry to find that Minogue has been invited to officially open new high-profile city-centre nightspot "Destiny's" this Friday, 21st March, so LMHR Glasgow have organised a protest at the venue.

The club's address is 18 Cambridge Street, and the protest starts at 8pm

The brutal racist murder of Kurdish asylum seeker Firsat Yildiz in the city's Sighthill area in 2001 was caused directly by the sort of vicious anti-asylum seeker language employed daily in the press, which was echoed in Minogue's ignorant comments. The Nazi BNP are planning to stand a number of candidates in the area in May's local elections. Bigoted comments from public figures feed into the growth of these thugs by giving racism a veneer of respectability.

After being alerted to the issue by Glasgow anti-racists, the ANL demanded that Destiny's (owned by entertainment giant First Leisure) cancel Minogue's appearance or else face a picket of the venue. Following one initial phone call to us from a First Leisure manager, Neil Maguire, we have heard nothing further from them, despite repeated phone messages to Maguire and his deputy Andy Millichamp. We can only therefore assume that Destiny's/First Leisure are ignoring the concerns of local people, black and white, and there will therefore be a protest lobby of Destiny's opening night.

We urge everyone to complain to the nightclub's management on 0141 353 6555, and anyone who can to join the picket Friday night.

The lack of seriousness with which Dannii Minogue's comments were taken by mainstream pop and other media, along with the current charge against Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Tweedy for racially-aggravated assault underlines why we launched the Love Music Hate Racism campaign last year. Fortunately, Minogue and Tweedy-style outbursts are unequivocally rejected by the vast majority of musicians and artists. The Love Music Hate Racism campaign, organised by the Anti Nazi League, brings together music lovers from all races and backgrounds to fight racism and defend our multicultural society. Love Music Hate Racism is backed by stars such as Ms Dynamite, Doves, Heartless Crew, Basement Jaxx and Tim Westwood.
